Loki Odinson was the son of Laufey, governor of the Frost Giants in Jotunheim, who was left for dead shortly after his birth. Discovered by Odin, Loki was taken to Asgard and raised by him and Frigga as an Asgardian prince, along with Thor. When Thor was crowned King, Loki broke the crown by allowing the Frost Giants to attack Asgard, prompting Thor to seek revenge on Jotunheim, which led to Thor's deportation to Earth and Loki found the truth about his legacy. Frigga gave Loki the throne when Odin fell to Odinsleep; however, while the Warriors Three and Sif tried to bring Thor back home, Loki was forced to try to stop them. No matter, Thor returned from exile on Earth and ended Loki's reign. Since Odin disagreed with his actions, Loki allowed himself to fall into the deep abyss of space, into a caterpillar created by the sudden abolition of Bifrost Bridge.

Transported by a caterpillar to the Sanctuary, Loki met The Other who asked to serve under Thanos' command and gave him a scepter. Loki was given an order over the Chitauri army to conquer the Earth, on the condition that Loki receive the Taneract of Thanos. When he got to Earth, Loki was able to take the Tesseract and use its power to open the caterpillar over New York City and cause the Chitauri Invasion, but all of Loki's plans were eventually defeated by the Avengers. Thor sent him back to Asgard as his prisoner, where Odin convicted him of spending the rest of his life in Asgardian prisons as a punishment for his crimes.

However, when Frigga was killed during the Sacking of Asgard, Loki was released by Thor to defeat the Dark Elves led by Malekith who wished to use the power of Aether to transform the universe into eternal darkness. During a battle with the Dark Elves in Svartalfheim, Loki killed his death, and, unbeknownst to everyone in the Kingdom, returned to Asgard and successfully ousted Odin from the throne, taking his place as King where he remained for several years. During his reign, Loki continued to rule Asgard by sending Sif on Earth missions to investigate Lorelei and Vin-Tak's attacks.

Finally, Thor's return forced Loki to expose his deception as the two traveled together to find Odin, arriving just in time to see Odin's death. Odin's disappearance allowed Hela, Odin's eldest son, to return from exile and to fight the Nine Kingdom. Loki found himself in trouble in Sakaar and Thor where Loki joined the Grmmaster while Thor was forced to fight the Hulk. Despite trying to deceive his way to freedom, Loki chose to join Thor and the Revengers in the final battle with Hela, in which Loki summoned Surtur, who defeated Hela by inflicting Ragnarök and destroying all of Asgard.

During his last term at Asgard, Loki took Tesseract to Odin's Vault and after the Destruction of Asgard, chose to sit next to his brother and support his ascension to the throne. The results of his collaboration with Thanos will be back soon to upset Loki, however, as his Mad Titan and his Black Order capture the Asgardians as they are on their way to Earth. In the ensuing altercation, Loki attempted to assassinate Thanos but in vain Mocking Thanos by telling him he would never be a god, Mad Titan cut his neck, eventually killing the God of Mischief.
