The Marvel Cinematic Universe's Civil War is officially over thanks to She-Hulk: Attorney At Law episode 8 confirming the Sokovia Accords are no longer effective. The events of Captain America: Civil War had significant ramifications on the MCU as the Avengers split up, but it also became illegal for some superheroes to remain active thanks to the Sokovia Accords. Audiences remained obsessed over the impact that the legal documents had, arguably even more so than whether Team Iron Man or Team Captain America won the fight in the long term. Phase 4 has gone back and forth on teasing the status of the Sokovia Accords, but She-Hulk episode 8 delivers a definitive answer.
During the courtroom battle of Matt Murdock and Jennifer Walters, Daredevil makes an offhand remark that the Sokovia Accords have been repealed. This line in She-Hulk confirms that Captain America: Civil War's Sokovia Accords are dead and no longer effective in the MCU. It is not confirmed exactly when they were repealed, as it happening during The Blip makes the most sense. However, WandaVision confirmed that the Sokovia Accords were still in effect in Phase 4, meaning their repealing is a recent development. Regardless, She-Hulk ending the Sokovia Accords explains how so many superheroes have been active in Phase 4.
Why The End of the Sokovia Accords Changes The MCU's Future
With She-Hulk's confirmation that the Sokovia Accords are no longer effective, the MCU's future looks completely different. The Captain America: Civil War documents loomed large over everything that happened before in Phase 4. Heroes and villains now once again have the freedom to operate when and where they want without risking legal troubles or detainment in The Raft. This does not mean that heroes have free rein to do as they please without any repercussions, as Damage Control and more organizations are still around to try and keep superheroes in check. However, the very serious consequences of not signing the Sokovia Accords have been tossed aside for the MCU's future.
The end of Captain America: Civil War drama also changes how audiences may perceive recent and upcoming developments. Many thought Damage Control targeting superheroes like Ms. Marvel and Spider-Man resulted from them enforcing the Sokovia Accords. It appears that this is not the case with She-Hulk confirming they no longer are in effect, which changes the legal implications of Damage Control's actions. The Sokovia Accords ending also means the theory that they were going to factor into forming the Thunderbolts team or allowing their actions is no longer accurate.
The MCU Ending The Sokovia Accords Is A Mistake
She-Hulk clarifying the status of the Sokovia Accords is a positive development for the MCU, but the decision to end their effectiveness is a mistake. Captain America: Civil War set up the Sokovia Accords to be something that would define everything that came after it. Instead, it barely had any real impact on the franchise, as even Hawkeye and Ant-Man struck pardon deals to make their storylines work. The MCU wasted the opportunity to show what life is really like for those who broke the Sokovia Accords or what it really looked like to have the world governments tell heroes where and when to fight. Phase 4 could have helped make up for that, but She-Hulk: Attorney At Law ending the Sokovia Accords does the exact opposite.
